Interpreter Quality Assurance

Trained Medical Interpreters

CyraCom's quality assurance process for interpreter recruiting, qualification assessment, training, and monitoring ensures accurate, transparent interpretation. This process contributes to improved patient care and clinical outcomes and is what makes the vital difference in the quality of service we provide.

Interpreter Recruiting

CyraCom recruits interpreters based on current and projected client demand. CyraCom targets already certified, trained, and/or experienced interpreters and searches for qualified applicants in highly regarded language, cultural or interpreting associations, at universities and colleges, community organizations, and through client referrals.

Interpreter Qualification Assessment

CyraCom conducts an in-depth screening interview and language proficiency assessment for each interpreter candidate. CyraCom uses a validated assessment to analyze the candidates' language proficiency, knowledge of medical terminology, and skills in applying medical interpreter protocols which include the CyraCom Code of Ethics. The CyraCom Code of Ethics emphasizes the critical nature of complete and accurate interpretation and confidentiality.

Interpreter Training

Each employee candidate completes 120 hours of classroom instruction in medical interpretation. The participants learn how to perform effective over-the-phone interpretation. Using innovative training techniques, the candidates learn to facilitate a complete and accurate flow of communication between Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and healthcare providers. Candidates practice cultural competency skills throughout the entire course. Each session allows the participants the opportunity to practice interacting with a variety of cultures and how to negotiate the resolution of cultural issues that commonly arise while providing healthcare to LEP patients.

Within the first year of working with CyraCom, employee interpreters receive advanced medical training in the CyraCom Medical Interpreter Program (CMIP). CMIP provides participants with 40 hours of intensive study in anatomy and physiology, medical procedures, common medical conditions, and medical terminology. Participants also review cultural competency models and how to employ them during medical interpretation.

Interpreter Monitoring

CyraCom randomly monitors its interpreters to confirm that they are adhering to CyraCom medical interpretation standards and procedures. The monitoring process rates each interpreter's level of competency and provides detailed feedback to facilitate continuous professional development. CyraCom also appreciates and encourages feedback from clients regarding interpreters' performance.
